With the theme of exploring technology and art in the information age, we focus on the humanistic spirit of the new era through research and practice of cutting-edge media and content. The project is titled "Poetic Application in Meta-Narrative - Mixed Virtual Experience in HKUST Campus". The project's core idea is to poetically deliver individual stories about HKUST through mixed virtual reality (MR) technology. The objects of critical thinking are "straightforward", "rude" narratives, and "grand narratives", hoping to show the humanistic romance in science and technology in the contemporary social context. The story of this project takes "Red Bird" as the invisible symbol, and the audience looks for lost memories in the campus space intertwined with virtual and reality. After experiencing and searching for memories, the audience enriches their wings, and the surrounding environment changes from dim to colorful. The purpose of the project is not only to enrich the creative content of the contemporary context through new media technology and new narrative methods, but also to create new cultural landmarks and cultural connotations through the new platform of HKUST, and to show the spirit of the times and the new style to the world.
The beginning of everything is the grand opening of the Guangzhou Campus of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in September 2022. This is a new beginning for HKUST to develop in the Mainland, a new practice of the concept of interdisciplinary education, and a new attempt for students to learn and cooperate with each other. All the information is depicting such a new hope and new starting point, so our project is also further exploring and digging into the topics of "beginning" and "inheritance". The purpose of this project is to convey emotion and inherit the Red Bird spirit, and discover the small individual stories about the construction and the beginning of the HKUST(GZ). Lyotard (1999) expressed in the crisis of postmodernity that only through small and individualized narratives can construct grand narratives which represented too general and labeled meaning. Therefore, students, parents, faculty members, school leaders, and people around us felt the same way as empathy, and we found that various groups of people generally do not understand the stories of school. This kind of ignorance cannot be resolved through traditional promotional videos and slogans. Only by citing real stories to convey and narrate the stories of many tiny individuals can empathy between people be aroused. At the same time, in terms of narrative means, our project introduces the concept of "poetic" narrative, whose ideas come from Heidegger's Elucidations of Holderlin's Poetry (2000). Through rhetorical means such as metaphor, metonymy, personification, etc., the real story is told with warmth. At the same time, we combine the foreword science and technology of virtual reality to assist the audience's experience and combine the ability of technology to amplify people's feelings with the modified ability of literature and art to finally achieve the purpose of conveying emotional temperature and spirit.
